Media AND Ethics

The media plays a big role for children as they grow up, especially the TV. That makes it even move important that parents understand when they should turn of the TV. One thing we talked about in class was how a child’s real experience of things could become less and less because of the artificial experience media provides for them. Nature is a big example. A child now days can see movies abut nature or visit web sites and see pictures of animals and read information. However, they may never go out and experience the real thing for themselves. In a way, the picture shows a slice of reality without really giving the full picture. As a result, many people may think that they have experienced something through watching it on TV or reading about it, when in actuality they have only experienced a part of it. Also, just watching a screen doesn’t induce thinking about things, where as going out in nature and looking at things encourages people to ask questions and learn things that a screen or book cannot teach them.
